The 2006 National Specialty Show for the Airedale Terrier Club of Canada was held on May 21, 2006 in conjunction with the K-W All Breed Shows and Trials in Kitchener, Ontario.

Saturday, May 20, 2006

Traditionally the Saturday of our Specialty weekend is reserved for our Obedience Specialty and the Wine and Cheese Social followed by the Annual Dinner and Auction. This year was no exception, but unfortunately we did not get any entries for the Obedience Specialty. Hopefully the club will be able to address this area of the sport of dog showing sometime in the future and perhaps find out why we are not able to attract exhibitors to our Obedience Specialty. If anyone has any thoughts or ideas on how we can improve this area of our club we trust you will contact any of the Executive or Show Committee and let them know.

The Wine and Cheese was once again a good success with the room reserved for us pretty much filled to capacity. Rumours were running rampant that other clubs holding events in the hotel were going to crash the social as they heard over the years this is a great social function but I never saw any evidence of these people amongst the happy Airedalers :o). Not that they would not have been welcome but glad to see the word is getting out of this event and we hope to continue providing it for our members and exhibitors.

Dinner once again was a sit down buffet served in a separate room of the hotel. Table sizes were kept to a minimum so as to allow more people to meet their fellow members and exhibitors and part take in the wonderful world of Airedale talk. Nary was a hungry face seen leaving the buffet tables and all agreed it was a delicious meal. A tip of the hat to the staff and organizers at the hotel for having the dinner run as smooth as they do each year.

After dinner the Annual Auction was held under the watchful eye of Ron and Wanda Purvis and their efforts to raise monies for the club's declining bank account were well received. Not sure of the total raised but it will be reported in due time by the Treasurer.

The table pieces were well received and once again Elaine and her team were very successful in presenting each of the dinner guests with a memento of the event that will be treasured for years to come.

Sunday was the big day for the Conformation Specialty Show and Puppy Sweepstakes. While this was one of the smallest Specialties, the quality of dogs in attendance will be ranked amongst the best and everyone should be pleased with how our breed was turned out. I think it best to leave it to our Specialty judge to comment on her entries.

I very much enjoyed judging your Airedale specialty and the chance to see your dogs. I know how difficult it is to prepare an Airedale and so particularly appreciated the way the dogs were prepared and handled.

My best of breed, Ch Indus Jailhouse Rock, is an excellent dog who could hold his own anywhere. He is beautifully balanced with good head and moved and showed so well. He really excited me. I also liked my top bitches very much. Ch Oakruns Billie at Cleos Pharoh took the award on the day but there were others on her heels. However, I must say that the next day when she came in the group under me she really sparkled and pressed hard for a group placing. It was good to see her again, as it was my best puppy bitch who the next day came through as best puppy. I think that Inglevalley Vintage Lace is full of promise, feminine, well made and has lots of vitality.

Under me she was beaten for best puppy by the most beautiful puppy dog, Tanyetta Paradym Scotch N Soda. I think he is exceptional for 9 months and he went on to take reserve winners dog. The breed is very lucky to have puppies of this quality and I feel they will both have exciting futures.

Best of winners was a very typical Airedale bitch, Inglevalley Royal Reflection, who has that extra bit of maturity with a good body and rib without losing any femininity. Winners dog was Skyecroft Easy To Love and reserve winners bitch, Riveraire's Texas Belle, both of whom did credit to their breeding.

I must thank the club for the marvellous bag of goodies. The “eats” are all gone now but the bag remains to accompany me on my trips and remind me of a most enjoyable judging assignment.

Our annual meeting was held after the Specialty was wrapped up and I'll leave it to our outgoing President to report on the meeting and the results of the activities which took place.

In what is becoming a tradition everyone was invited to Kelly’s place to celebrate the end of a great weekend and relax a bit before heading home to recuperate. A big thank you to all those who attended and trust we will see as many Airedalers as possible out to the Booster in London in the fall and plans are under way to support the Specialties and Boosters in 2007.
